“Bees are insects with wings closely related to wasps and ants, known for their role in pollination and, in the case of the best-known bee species, the western honey bee, for producing honey. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea. They are presently considered a clade, called Anthophila. There are over 16,000 known species of bees in seven recognized biological families.[1][2] Some species — including honey bees, bumblebees, and stingless bees — live socially in colonies while most species (>90%) — including mason bees, carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, and sweat bees — are solitary.”[1]

A Quick Observation: Bees play a vital role in food security as they are pollinators. There are plenty of studies to show how human activities are wiping out the pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, bats and birds. For instance use of pesticides, habitat destruction and climate change are affecting them. Less pollinators like bees will mean less food. Yes, less chemically uncontaminated food.

This Bee on an Ela Batu flower was visiting the flowers of this tree in search of nectar. While being benefited by the flowers, we are happy that this Bee did its part in bringing us chemical fertilizer free food to our plates. Glad they are our visitors!!
